Adfest Lotus Winners 2009

ere are the awards presented at ADFEST (Asia Pacific Advertising Festival, run this year from March 19 to 21 in Pattaya, Thailand. The festival, launched in 1998, awards the “Lotus” in the categories of Press, Poster, Outdoor, Film, Radio, Direct, Design, Cyber, Print Craft, Film Craft, New Director, 360 Lotus (across at least 3 categories), Innova Lotus (judged by level of genuine innovation, talk-value, and results), Lotus Roots. The Lotus Roots award, launched as part of this year’s Made In Asia theme, rewards ideas that strongly reflect cultural elements from the region, whether through lifestyles, customs, beliefs, or other aspects.

Promo Lions at Cannes 2009

The 56th Cannes International Advertising Festival has honoured the art of sales promotion with the Promo Lions. Sales promotion for the purpose of Cannes Lions is activity designed to create immediate activation and/or offer for the sales of a product or service. This may be effected using sampling, tie-ins, competitions, events, in-store advertising (display/point-of-purchase material), PR, exhibitions, direct marketing and other promotional marketing methods in ways that build/create brand equity with consumers and customers, are sustainable and distinctive. Promo Lions are awarded to the freshest creative ideas that are intrinsically linked to brands and achieve measurable results.

Grand Prix this year went to Yubari Resort’s promotions, developed by Beacon Communications, Tokyo, Japan. Yubari resort went broke in 2007. Beacon’s PR strategy focused on the tag line, Yubari, no money but love, pointing to the fact that Yubari boasted the lowest divorce rate in the whole of Japan. They created a couple of loveable, yet slightly ironic characters called ‘Yubari Fusai’. “Fusai” means both “debt” and “married couple” in Japanese.

Cannes Film Lions for 2009

The Film Lions at Cannes International Advertising Festival have been awarded. Of the 3453 entries in the Film category, the jury, chaired by David Lubars, Chairman and Chief Creative Officer, BBDO North America, shortlisted 261 entries of which 16 were awarded Gold, 36 Silver and 35 Bronze Lions.

Grand Prix was presented to Tribal DDB Amsterdam, The Netherlands, for “Carousel“, an innovative advertisement for the Philips Cinema 21:9 television. The recognition of an online film experience rather than television commercial had the jury considering splitting the category into two to provide for two Grand Prix awards, one for television and one for alternative media.
